Westman Women's Shelter

Shelter Services & Support Groups
The YWCA Westman Women’s Shelter provides safe, emergency shelter to individuals and their children who are at risk due to relationship violence. The Shelter is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and has space for up to 24 women and children.

Services

Emergency Crisis Line Services

Crisis Line Services provide crisis intervention, counselling, information, education, and referrals to individuals who have experienced family/domestic abuse and to the general public on a 24-hour basis through local telephone services. Crisis Line support worker can refer an individual to an on-site counsellor upon request.

Residential Support Services

Residential support program provides a short-term, safe and emergency shelter for individuals and their children who are at risk of relationship abuse.

Children’s Support Program

The program is intended to assist child witnesses of abuse and understand the dynamics of abuse in the context of family relationships. Support is provided for the children while they are residing in shelter and after leaving shelter. Support and counselling are also provided to non-residential children who are witnesses to family violence.

Child Care Program

Childcare will be provided while parents/guardians attend daily counselling sessions, legal, medical, housing, and social services appointments.

Follow-Up Support Program

To provide assistance to residents who have left the Shelter and are planning long-term and ongoing changes toward an independent lifestyle and development of non-abusive, reciprocal relationships. Ensures a continuum of support, available to them after the crisis stage has passed and are re-establishing in the community

Non-Residential Support Program

The Non-Residential program is to provide support services for individuals who have experienced family/domestic abuse requesting assistance to make informed decisions toward establishing themselves in a non-abusive environment. These services include individual counselling, support groups, skill building, advocacy and referrals. Non-Residential program also assists individuals to plan and implement changes toward personal growth, increased independence and empowerment in their lives.

Community Public Education and Outreach Program

The Community Public Education and Outreach program offers free public education to the community to raise awareness of the services and programs offered by the YWCA Brandon and of family/domestic violence issues.

Assistance in Protection Order Application

The Shelter has Protection Order Designates to help people apply for Protection Orders.

Shelter Support Groups

Residential Support Group

The residential support group runs twice a week for residents at the Shelter. The group will discuss a new topic every session related to domestic violence such as 21 signs of an abusive person, types and cycle of abuse, leaving an abusive relationship, safety planning, healthy and unhealthy relationships, self-esteem, boundaries, fear, anger, and thinking patterns. Residents will get to know each other better while coming together to share and learn from each other. Child care will be provided during group sessions.

Residential Something Fun Evening Group

The residential program is facilitating evening and weekend groups that aim at bringing our residents together in a fun environment to help assist in their healing journey. The aim is to host Something Fun every evening with the exception of Thursdays. Residents including children are all welcome.

Housing Support Group

The housing support group is a monthly interactive group session that will feature a guest speaker. The purpose of the group is to offer people that have accessed the Westman Women’s Shelter a comfortable setting to discuss the challenges of finding housing, and to discuss and share information in regards to housing resources in both the Public and Private market.

Building Community Connections Support Group

Building Community Connections support group is a weekly group focuses in promoting physical and mental health, partnering up with other service providers in the community for support and education, and monthly fun activities to reward and celebrate client wins and continued efforts.

Parenting Support Group

This in shelter program is to help parents connect with each other, share the ups and downs of parenting, discuss developmental milestone and connect parents to the resources within our community.

Sharing Circle

Sharing circles are a space which allow us to identify our feelings, to express ourselves and to experience the art of sharing and listening. Sharing Circles allow our residents to learn from each other, build confidence, self-esteem and develop strong relationships built on trust and acceptance.
In a circle, we are all equal. No one in front of you, No one behind, No one above you and No one below you.

Awareness Support Group

Awareness support group is a positive atmosphere where women can discuss and disclose issues that are pertinent to their wellness and healthy living. The voice of
women who share their emotions, inspire each other to be a powerful influence. This group will take place once a month.
